Unwanted hair grows for many reasons and can be removed by many methods, some temporary, others semi-permanent and with electrolysis it is permanent.
At our clinic we remove the vast majority of unwanted hair by IPL laser treatment. However, that is not right for everyone. IPL or laser cannot reduce or eliminate white, very blond or red hairs, but electrolysis can. Also, some people’s skin isn’t suitable for IPL or laser so electrolysis is very a good option for them.
Regardless of your skin colour electrolysis can prove successful in permanently removing the hair. Electrolysis has been used for over 140 years in successfully permanently removing unwanted hair, not only on the face but all other parts of the body. How do I book?
How does electrolysis work?
A fine needle is inserted into the hair shaft and a small electric current, radio wave or heat is passed down the needle to kill the root of the hair so it does not grow back with the same force. After several electrolysis hair removal treatments the hair just gives up and completely dies, leaving the skin permanently hairless.
A sterile probe is used with every treatment and is disposed of afterwards as medical waste. The electrolysis machine itself determines the precise current needed for that particular hair.
Any other equipment that comes into contact with your skin is put through a medical autoclave steriliser, just the same as when you visit your doctor, to eliminate any cross-contamination.
We use blend & Diathermy Techniques with electrolysis
This also uses a single probe and combines the above modalities to produce a small amount of heated lye to destroy follicular tissue.
We use multiple techniques depending on your hair and skin condition.
Diathermy is preferred if you have a lot of hair or really tough to remove as it is faster and breaks down the strength of the follicle and is safer for darker skin types.
Blend is for areas of less hair, Curly hair follicles & clients that have good skin health & regime at home.
What should I do to prepare for an electrolysis treatment?
To prepare for the treatment you must not pluck, wax or shave the area.
But don’t worry your hair does not need to be too long! As long as you can feel the hair above the skin when you run your hand across, it is long enough for us to see with our magnifying lights!
Your first visit with us will always be a consultation, in this visit we allow up to a 20 minute session of hair removal complimentary.
Go through what to expect from electrolysis.
Check your suitability to the treatment, explain risks, assess what is influencing your hair growth, and go through a thorough treatment plan. You will also recieve a sterex witch hazel gel free of charge to take home to heal your skin faster.
What do I need to do after treatment?
You are given precise written aftercare instructions that come to your email that night of your service, so you know exactly what to do after treatment to maximise the condition of your skin and what you must do between treatments to prepare for your next visit. We recommend the use of sterex witch hazel gel or O cosmedics medi soothe gel which is calming, soothing and anti-bacterial.
Must Do’s / Dont’s
- Wear SPF daily
- Do NOT pick / scratch the area
- Do Not remove the hair by tweezing or waxing. Only shaving or trimming with little scissors is allowed
- If you ever think something is not correct always contact us ASAP
O Cosmedics Skin Care recommended to use between sessions are:
O Cosmedics B3 serum – as this helps prevent post inflammatory pigmentation
Mineral Pro SPF – To protect your skin from the sun
3D hyaluronic acid – To keep your skin hydrated ( best for healing & blend method)
Antioxidant Gel Cleanser – Gentle enough to use straight after an electrolysis session
How long does it take for the skin to settle down after a treatment?
The skin will be red for around an hour or so, but should settle down after that.
If your skin stays irritated for longer than 48 hours please contact us so we can make changes to your next booking settings.
We do not recommend to wear a face mask in the first 24 hours post electrolysis and if you need to make sure you are wearing a brand new one to prevent infection.
How many treatments will I need?
There is no true answer to this as every bodies hair growth is different & the growth influence is different such as:
- Hormonal ( Menopause / PCOS/ Pregnancy)
- Medications
- Nationality
- Transgender
We how ever say on an average of 10 sessions you will see a reduction in hair growth & continue treatments until your hair is gone.
How effective is electrolysis?
Very effective and as permanent, as long as you stay committed to your treatment plan until completion & follow home care instructions.
Your in clinic plan can start from weekly to fortnightly sessions as we want to catch the hair while its in the growth phase.
